Livigno, 2 dicembre 2025 -  Livigno is pleased to celebrate the inauguration of the new Enel primary substation, a strategic infrastructure that marks a decisive step toward a more modern and sustainable energy system serving the community and future international events.

The inauguration ceremony was attended by the President of the Lombardy Region, Attilio Fontana; the Mayor of Livigno, Remo Galli; the CEO of the Milan Cortina 2026 Foundation, Andrea Varnier; Enel Grids and Innovation Director, Gianni Vittorio Armani; and the CEO of E-Distribuzione, Vincenzo Ranieri — a clear testament to the strategic importance of this project for the entire region and for the upcoming Olympic event.

Built at an altitude of 2,177 meters, the primary substation is now the highest in Italy and represents a key investment to ensure the energy needed for the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. This infrastructure is set to leave a lasting mark on the territory: it will not only support the needs of the Olympic venues but will also provide Livigno with a more stable and efficient network, benefiting residents, businesses, and accommodation facilities.

The Olympic Games represent a unique opportunity to accelerate projects that will remain part of our community’s heritage. The new primary substation is not only an infrastructure serving the Games, but a tangible legacy that improves quality of life, supports tourism development, and prepares Livigno for the energy challenges of the future. It is an example of how the Olympic momentum can generate lasting value for the territory,” stated Luca Moretti, President of Livigno Next.

The construction of the facility was guided by a strongly sustainability-oriented approach. Its underground structure allows for harmonious integration into the Alpine landscape, minimizing visual impact. Moreover, the 27,000 m³ of material excavated during construction was entirely reused for community-focused works, such as the new municipal parking area at Passo Eira, in line with circular economy principles.

The project also includes a major enhancement of the Alta Valtellina power grid:
– 60 km of underground lines
– 4 new secondary substations
– 12 substations upgraded with advanced remote-control and automation technologies

‘For Livigno, this infrastructure is an investment in the future: it allows us to safely host the Olympic events and, above all, to enhance a legacy that will remain for generations to come,’ concludes Luca Moretti.
