Every summer, Little Tibet proves itself to be a place where one can regenerate body, mind and spirit with sport: a veritable ‘en plein air’ gym - with fresh, clean air thanks to its altitude of 1,816 metres - for professionals and amateurs of various disciplines, but also for all those who want to spend days in the open air.
This internationally renowned destination in the Valtellina valley, which in two years‘ time will be in the spotlight during the freestyle and snowboarding competitions of the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics, brings together various sporting proposals that allow people to experience moments in contact with nature, between fun and adrenalin.
In its 227 km2 of lush nature, Livigno is home to 1,500 km of hiking trails that wind their way through the woods. Hiking enthusiasts - even families - cannot fail to be enraptured by the wide variety of trails in Livigno's network of paths to invigorate the body while feeling in harmony with the beauty of the mountains and its panoramas, even reaching the area's alpine lakes and discovering their different shades of blue.
Here, there is no shortage of proposals for experienced hikers and those who want to put themselves to the test: surrounded by 22 peaks reaching up to 3,000 metres in height, Livigno has ten iconic peaks from which to enjoy a privileged and breathtaking view of the valley and far beyond, namely Cima Cavalli, Cima Fopel, Corno di Capra, Monte Breva, Monte Garone, Monte Vago, Piz Cotschen, Pizzo Cassana, Pizzo Filone and Pizzo Paradisino. For those who want to immerse themselves in nature and discover the fragrances and colours of the Livigno summer with their family or friends, the town offers a number of evocative places to visit, also in the company of expert local mountain guides: the Val Nera waterfall, Val Saliente, Val Federia and Sorgente Solforosa, and Val Alpisella, passing through Val Tort. Unmissable for groups of adults and children are the stops at the malghe (shepherd's huts) or refreshment stops where they can sample the true flavours of Livigno, choosing from a variety of typical recipes made with km0 products, but also come into contact with the stable animals.
Also for those who want to try a sporting experience that combines nature and animals, an ideal proposal is horseback riding: guided tours to discover the area are offered in the area, among forests and scenic routes, suitable both for experts and for those who are riding a horse for the first time.
The Livigno area also welcomes all bikers who, on the saddle of their own bike or e-bike, wish to explore the 3. 200km GPS mapped between Mottolino, Carosello 3000 and Sitas - where there is also the Mottolino Bikepark, the Carosello 3000 Mountain Park and the Sitas Mountain Area for those who want to enjoy more adrenaline-fuelled experiences on two wheels, including downhill and freeride - or who prefer to enjoy the view while riding along the 17km cycle path, suitable for everyone, including families with children, that crosses the entire Livigno valley. Road bikers, on the other hand, will be able to experience the most famous Alpine passes - such as the Stelvio, Bernina, Gavia, Mortirolo, Foscagno and Maloja, which are often chosen by professional teams as the location for their summer training in the mountains - or experience the thrill of riding the epic climb to the finish line of Mottolino, at an altitude of 2,400 metres, defined as the most challenging stage of the 107th edition of the Giro d'Italia.
Livigno is also ideal for those who love to discover the world by running: trail running enthusiasts will be able to choose which route to take according to their athletic training and needs, from hilly trails located closer to the town to more challenging and vertical trails that reach the 3000m peaks surrounding the valley, almost all of which can be reached on foot from the centre.
Those who prefer water sports in the midst of nature can enjoy stand-up paddle boarding and kayaking at Lake Gallo. Those who want to train in the water indoors, but still surrounded by the wonderful panorama of the Livigno summer, can choose the two swimming pools - one 25 metres and the other 50 metres - of Aquagranda. Here, it will be possible to play beach volleyball and beach tennis, as well as train on the athletics track of one of the most avant-garde sports and wellness centres in Europe and named CONI Olympic Preparation Centre in 2022.
