NEW WORKS IN LIVIGNO AHEAD OF THE OLYMPICS 2026

Livigno, an Alpine gem overlooking Alta Valtellina from its altitude, is preparing to host the Five Circles dream: the resort will in fact be the venue of the Milan Cortina 2026 Olympics and will award 26 medals for the disciplines of Freestyle and Snowboard, confirming it as one of the best winter resorts for these two sports worldwide.
Since receiving its nomination as an Olympic venue, Livigno has immediately taken its first steps toward the Olympics and has begun to change its appearance, making improvements in every aspect of the resort to offer athletes and tourists alike a premium Livigno experience, ensuring an ever-increasing quality and variety of services, facilities accommodations, infrastructure and, consequently, sports activities as well.
The upcoming winter season, which will officially start on November 30 and will be the one anticipating the Olympic Games, officially presents one of the projects included in the Olympic Works Plan and which, from now on, will represent a strong point of Livigno's offerings, both in winter and summer. The novelty involves the Mottolino ski area, one of the two slopes involved in the Five Circles event: here, more precisely on Mount Sponda, a reservoir for artificial snowmaking has been built at an altitude of 2,600 m, a commissioned work constructed under the aegis of Arch. Fabio Massimo Saldini and built by Società Infrastrutture Milano Cortina 2026. The basin is designed to provide a snow collection system that will be used in view of snowboarding competitions during the 2026 Olympics.
This innovative work is part of a larger intervention, which focuses on the eastern side of the valley and includes the construction of four race tracks and a chairlift. These will be served by the new snowmaking systems, including the new reservoir and a pumping station, which will ensure a state-of-the-art system in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability for the Olympic and post-Olympic slopes.
The construction of the new reservoir also represents an important water supply for snowmaking for the entire surrounding ski area. In addition, thanks to the reuse of land from the excavation operations of the reservoir, the slopes and slopes of the mountain are being landscaped, with subsequent greening of the surfaces through the exclusive use of native species.
In the warmer seasons, however, the new reservoir will be able to welcome tourists and Livigno residents, becoming a new destination to reach for some sports and recreational activities, and from which to enjoy the majesty of the Rhaetian Alps and the beauty of their lush nature. A meeting point for families, school groups and hiking enthusiasts who want to delve into the larch forests of the area, living an authentic alpine experience.
