LIVIGNO: THE YEAR 2024 IN NUMBERS

LIVIGNO: THE YEAR 2024 IN NUMBERS

23/12/2024

Livigno celebrates a successful 2024, confirming itself as an Alpine destination of excellence for sport, gastronomy, events (with 25 events of international scope organised throughout the year) and tourism.

In 2024, in fact, the resort distinguished itself for an innovative and far-sighted vision - also in view of the 2026 Milano Cortina Olympic Games - that wanted to bring to light the essence of Livigno, that is ‘Alpine Energy, at the highest level’, always keeping an eye on its values: respect and care for the territory; attention for citizens and tourists; pride for traditions, celebrated and handed down.

WINTER 2023/24: SNOW, FUN AND INTERNATIONAL EVENTS
The winter season saw Livigno as the protagonist of important results, thanks to a perfect combination of innovation, sport and international events.

From the end of October 2023 until the end of April 2024, it snowed 75 days in Livigno for a total of 13.33 metres of snow, equivalent to a two-storey building: a guarantee for all winter sports enthusiasts who were able to enjoy days of fun in the ski area. The ski area saw 1,246,442 first-time visitors registered from 2 December 2023 to 1 May 2024, while the most popular sports other than alpine skiing were snowshoeing, ski mountaineering and cross-country skiing. The latter activity was made possible thanks to the snowfarming technique, through which the resort preserved 40,000m3 of snow, guaranteeing optimal conditions to enjoy a prelude to winter as early as the end of October, with athletes and tourists training on the cross-country skiing ring.

Once again this year, Livigno confirmed itself as a mountain destination chosen by numerous international federations of different disciplines for altitude training. The altitude - ranging from 1,816 to 3,300 metres - and the many state-of-the-art facilities designed for athletes contributed to the winning of 23 medals during the Paris 2024 Olympics.

The Valtellina resort has also been the stage for numerous high-level events that have attracted artists, athletes and travellers from all over the world.

On a sporting level, in December 2023 the annual La Sgambeda and Minisgambeda took place, which saw a total of 430 participants; from 13 to 15 March, Livigno hosted the Telemark World Cup, which saw athletes from 13 nations compete; then it was the setting for the Junior Snowboard and Freestyle World Championships, held from 22 to 30 March, with over 300 participants from 29 countries.

Gourmet food enthusiasts were able to attend the Sunrise Mattias, the high-end gourmand breakfast, organised at dawn in an atmospheric alpine setting, while music lovers enjoyed the Snowland Festival, which attracted more than 15,000 people over three days.

SUMMER 2024: NATURE, SPORT AND OUTDOOR EVENTS
In summer, Livigno once again proved to be an open-air gym for all enthusiasts and a place ready to host international cultural and sporting events.

The lush territory, well-maintained trails suitable for all difficulties, numerous bike trails and excellent infrastructure have made Livigno a popular destination for sports enthusiasts. In the summer of 2024, running, hiking and biking were the main activities practised : three activities that invigorate the body and, at the same time, allow one to feel in harmony with the mountains. Livigno is the perfect place to practice them because the resort boasts 3200km of GPS-mapped trails, which is equivalent to the distance between Milan and Palermo!

In particular, biking has been confirmed as an ever-growing trend: a sporting activity that, in all its forms, fascinates national and international tourists, who in Livigno have the opportunity to pedal over some of the most famous Alpine passes, such as those of the Giro d'Italia, which this year stopped in Livigno from 19 to 21 May, transforming the destination into an international reference point for cycling.

Several events enlivened the Valtellina resort in the summer: sports-themed Alè la Merckx, the first edition of the granfondo with 850 participants, and Stralivigno, a half-marathon involving 1100 people from 19 countries. La Milanesiana, the event conceived and directed by Elisabetta Sgarbi and one of the most interesting and culturally important events, chose Livigno for the third year in a row as one of its stages and was attended by 1200 people. The Alpenfest, the event celebrating the traditional Alpine transhumance in September, was also appreciated by 1200 guests, both citizens and tourists from different countries of the world, who were able to immerse themselves in the local traditions, also tasting typical dishes reinterpreted in a gourmet key.

FOOD: YEAR-ROUND EXCELLENCE
Gastronomy played a central role in 2024: from the traditional dishes offered daily to the high-level events and initiatives - such as the Mattias Sunrise - that highlighted the gourmet soul of the destination.

Along with pizza, pizzoccheri and sciätt (an average of 96,000 dishes are prepared in a year ) were the dishes most requested by travellers throughout the year, underlining the desire to taste the authentic flavours of the territory. A desire also evident from the products purchased in the shops in the pedestrian centre (which would require 3,000 steps to go through it all): the most frequently purchased food product is slinzega, a sausage with a strong and intense flavour made from the leg of beef.

On a territorial level, the Livigno Dairy distinguished itself as a symbol of quality, producing 60,000 wheels of cheese and welcoming thousands of visitors who were able to taste a culinary offer made with km0 and 100% Made in Italy ingredients.

THE IMPORTANCE OF THE TERRITORY: A JEWEL TO BE GUARDED
Livigno's territory - equal to 221 km2, i.e. slightly larger than Lichtenstein - has always been recognised as a jewel to be guarded, handing down from generation to generation the care and attention to continue to make it a place rich in natural species, such as the larch trees, Livigno's ‘symbol’ trees, some of which are over 700 years old, and wild animals such as deer, roe deer, marmots and various species of birds of prey.

The area is also an inexhaustible source of genuine ingredients, essential for the preparation of tasty dishes, both gourmand and traditional, that tell the story and evolution of the locality.

The valley is also home to numerous barn animals: over 360 dairy cows, 400 cattle, 500 sheep, 200 goats and around 80 horses, and it is also thanks to them that most of the dairy and butchery products are made locally, thus guaranteeing quality and authenticity.

Livigno's landscape is capable of making locals and travellers fall in love. On Instagram, by searching for the location ‘Livigno’, thousands of posts appear depicting both the Alpine landscape in its different seasons and the people. Of the whole area, however, there are four main ‘Instagrammable’ spots: the Crap de La Paré, a point from which it is possible to observe the entire valley; the ampoules of arnica positioned outside the houses in the pedestrianised centre; the balconies blooming with brightly coloured geraniums; and finally the G91 fighter-bomber in the Mottolino ski area.

It is therefore with satisfaction that Livigno greets 2024, a year during which it has confirmed its role of Alpine excellence and anticipated an equally promising future. With its sights set on the 2026 Milan-Cortina Olympics, the resort continues to innovate itself and at the same time celebrate its roots, always focusing on enhancing the area, the wellbeing of its people and the authenticity of its traditions.
